The Shenandoah County Library System is unique in Virginia for five of the six libraries are staffed by volunteers.  In 1997 all but one of the community libraries in the County joined the County Library System, and they have retained their nature as volunteer organizations.

The County Library is staffed by seven full time and five part-time employees, but it counts on volunteers to perform a host of services.  They assist with displays, shelving, weeding, re-cycling, outreach services, book sales, and special programs.  An especially active group of volunteers supports the Shenandoah Room and its programs. There are opportunities for all age ranges to volunteer .

The five member libraries rely on volunteers to run their circulation desks.  Willingness to take on this responsibility requires training but is much appreciated.  The member libraries are always looking for members of their communities who have some computer skills and are willing to learn how to work the circulation desk and donate a few hours of service each month.  They also welcome volunteers who are more interested in helping with programming and more traditional roles.

As a group these volunteers save the County over $250,000 each year.  We would like to extend the hours that our community libraries are open so that they can better serve students and commuters.  Check out the individual community library volunteer sites for more information.
